Regional information

Just outside the coast of Guldborgsund Municipality two large offshore wind farms are located, this is Nysted Wind farm from 2003 with 72 turbines, and Rødsand II from 2011 with 95 turbines. Together, these two offshore parks are among the largest in the world. Technical maintenance are based in Rødby and Gedser and a number of local small and medium sized companies are involved in developing and supplying wind mill components, spare parts and service.

Partner information

Guldborgsund Municipality is the southernmost municipality in Denmark and a typical Danish rural municipality with 63.000 inhabitants covering an area of 906 km2. More than 80 % of the area is covered by fields and forests. Half of the population is living in small villages and rural areas. The main town, Nykøbing with 20.000 inhabitants was founded during the medieval period; just like three other towns: Sakskøbing, Stubbekøbing and Nysted all being between 600 and 900 years old.

Gedser Harbour with the ferry line Gedser–Rostock is the port between Europe and Scandinavia and two European transport corridors (the West European and the East European) are meeting in Guldborgsund Municipality. This makes international cooperation and trade easy, and traffic and infrastructure are high on the political agenda.

The main business branches in the municipality include trade, transport, industrial production (metal, plastic and glass fiber), social & health sector, agriculture and tourism. The tourists are attracted by the long white Marielyst Beach at the Baltic Sea, the friendly nature, the old medieval towns and the many small yacht-harbours, the Crocodile Zoo and the Middel Age Centre.

The Municipal Administration employs a total of 6,500 staff including staff for kindergartens, schools, eldercare, planning and roads etc. The total budget for Guldborgsund Municipality was 630 mio. € in 2009.

Reason for participating in “South Baltic OFFER”

Guldborgsund Municipality would like to explore and develop the benefits of being neighbours to the two large offshore wind farms Nysted and Rødsand II; for the local offshore wind energy businesses, for the municipalities and for the local inhabitants.

In addition, Guldborgsund Municipality has a specific agenda on energy savings and on converting fossil energy sources to renewable energy sources. From 137 privately owned on-shore wind turbines there is an annual electricity production of 137 GWh. Moreover, in Guldborgsund Municipality there are located eleven public and private district heating and power plants. Together, these are producing 404 GW heat and 75 GW electricity based on 97 % renewable energy sources: biomass, biogas, household waste and industrial waste.
