Offshore Wind Energy (OWE) is a very important new market with great potential for existing and new businesses in the region. A large wind farm is under development in the area. The project is called “Blekinge Offshore” and the capacity of this project (wind farm) will be 2500 MW. The construction will have a great positive impact on the businesses in the whole area of Blekinge.
In Sweden, municipalities collect taxes directly from the population and have certain flexibility on how funds are used. Only a small percentage of taxes are paid to the State. This gives, together with planning monopoly, Swedish municipalities a unique opportunity to work with progressive areas it chooses to prioritize. Thus, the municipality focuses on Offshore Wind Energy being aware that it is vital that the public and all stakeholders get better knowledge about OWE to have a good basis for future decisions.
Reason for participating in “South Baltic OFFER”
The Municipality of Sölvesborg wants to promote service and supply industry and their networks to acknowledge OWE as a valuable market opportunity in the South Baltic Region. Simultaneously the municipality wants to increase the public knowledge and the acceptance of OWE. They will contribute to the latter with their own competence in building networks and clusters among business partners. There are a number of companies in the region that can contribute to this business area (e.g. Blekinge Offshore AB), and the mission will be to connect them with business partners in the other countries. Additionally the municipality wants to obtain best practice in OWE systems including coastal infrastructure required (education system, service- and supply industry etc). The region has extensive experience in cross-border projects and a long experience in EU projects.
