Regional information

The Pomeranian region is one of the 16 Polish voivodeships located in the centre-north of Poland by the Baltic Sea. With an area of 18 000 km˛ and the population of 2,2 millions inhabitants. Wind energy is part of the regional energy supply with 19 onshore wind farms with a total capacity of 138 MW, however large amount of energy is imported from the more industrial southern regions. The need for new local energy sources and favourable geographical conditions provided by the wide access to the sea will act as a driving force for the development of the Offshore Wind Energy.

Partner information

POMCERT was created to stimulate work on research, consulting and innovation programmes within the field of environmental protection in the Pomeranian Region. This is being done through the integration of experts in a wide range of environmental science as well as environmental technology and engineering. In its present form, POMCERT is set by the resolution of senates of three universities: Medical University of Gdansk (GUMed), Gdansk University of Technology (GUT) and University of Gdansk (UG). It remains an open structure active in the fields of innovation, energy and environment. POMCERT also cooperates with a wide network of administration, academia and business organisations within Poland, Europe and the World.

Reason for participating in “South Baltic OFFER”

Although offshore wind energy is an intensively developing concept in Europe, it still requires a strong support and promotion in Poland. Through the project, POMCERT wants to support the offshore wind energy and thus contribute to the introduction of the technology in Poland which will result in the general development of the region, fulfilling the 3x20-EU commitment and increasing the energy safety.
