Regional information

Karlskrona began its journey in 1680 and is characterized by its maritime history. It was shaped by the world’s leading naval officers, architects, innovators and ship builders. Karlskrona – located in the South East of Sweden – is a naval city and is so unique that UNESCO has put the city on the World Heritage Sites list. 63.469 inhabitants live in Karlskrona on an expanse of 1.047 km ².

A large variety of businesses (4.437 companies) have realised the benefit of combining their operations with quality of life in a strategic location. Here you find ABB High Voltage Cables, Dynapac, Telenor Sverige, Kockums AB (largest private employer), Ericsson, Flextronics, MCT Brattberg and Roxtec.

The Karlskrona – Gdynia sea route is one of the most important in Sweden in terms of trade in the Baltic Sea. Verkö Harbour is the site of the ferry terminal co-owned by Stena Line and the municipality. The 70.000 m² Industrial Park at Verkö offer a vacant industrial land with direct access to the harbour.

Karlskrona has been at the forefront of telecommunications and IT since the early 90´s and the TelecomCity network, with 50 over businesses, is a trendsetter for mobile solutions and wireless services. Karlskrona is the main campus of Blekinge Institute of Technology, which holds a unique position in the area of IT, physical planning and sustainable development.

Finally, Karlskrona has also been chosen as the location for a number of government agencies such as the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning, the command centre of the Swedish Coast Guard and the main naval base of the Swedish Navy.

Partner information

As in Sölvesborg and every other municipality in Sweden, Karlskrona collects taxes directly from the population and also decides how funds should be used. Only a small percentage of taxes are directly paid to the State. This represents, together with planning monopoly, a unique opportunity to work with the progressive areas it chooses to prioritize. The Department of Business and Commerce within the Municipality of Karlskrona has a genuine interest in the development of wind energy, because companies in the region deal with components in the supply chain of this particular subject. Offshore Wind Energy (OWE) is a very important new market with great potential for existing and new businesses in the region.

The municipality of Karlskrona is a partner of several INTERREG projects.

Reason for participating in “South Baltic OFFER”

The Department of Business and Commerce has been active for several years in networking and promoting OWE. These business contacts will be connected to the project and be part of the cross border development.

During the project development phase the Department of Business and Commerce has already benefited from new contacts within the South Baltic Region. In addition, they initiated a regional cooperation in Blekinge and will work closely together in the implementation of cross-border activities. As their everyday focus is on business development, the Department of Business and Commerce is looking forward to coordinate Component 4 “Cross-border Offshore Wind Energy Business Development”.
