Regional information

The wind energy sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

With around 1,500 megawatts of installed onshore wind energy capacity from over 1,324 erected wind energy plant (as of 30.06.2009), the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) is one of the leading regions in the wind energy sector. The electricity generated by this contributes to over 40% of the net electricity consumption in MV.

The wind energy sector in MV has further developed in parallel with an impressive dynamism. From project development and conception through production and supply to service and maintenance, you will find on site nationally and internationally active companies through the whole value creation chain, i.e. whether foundations, tower, turbine and gondola or rotor blades - all products here are “Made in MV”. Scientific partners of the wind energy sector are the universities and technical colleges of the state as well as public and private institutes.

With the opening up of offshore wind energy, the sector is experiencing great growth stimulus. The first offshore wind farm is taking shape off the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With the construction of the power supply line, implementation has begun for the first German commercially operated offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea »Baltic I«. The economic potential is considerable: more than 1 billion Euros is invested per offshore wind farm. So a variety of new jobs for highly qualified staff have come into being, as well as new job descriptions. In particular, the fields of service and maintenance of offshore wind farms offer great potential for employees. The ports in the state, such as Rostock and Sassnitz, have the best conditions to establish themselves as logistics and service support bases. Further potential is created in the medium and long term through the planned designation of new areas suitable for wind and upgrading.

The success story of the wind energy sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will continue. Join in!
